BEHIND THE MUSIC / ISABELLA & DAVID
A love remembered.
A light carried forward.
The Story of Of Ash & Light
The fictional lore behind the music.
Two childhood friends. A song they never stopped believing in. And a promise that the message would outlive its messengers.
Begin their story ↓

CHAPTER 01
Before the Ashes
Before anyone knew their music, Isabella and David knew each other.
They grew up beneath the wide Arizona sky, shared school corridors, and found a language in the songs they loved. Isabella wrote and sang. David answered with an acoustic guitar. The warmth of the seventies and the bright melodies of the eighties found their way into everything they made.
They called their band Of Ash & Light.
Their songs reached the radio a few times, then slipped quietly away. Still, they kept writing. They believed Jesus could reach someone through a melody, even if they never learned that person’s name.
CHAPTER 02
A Light in the Hospital
One night, strangers took Isabella and left her badly burned in a back alley.
She survived. Recovery took months.
David came to the hospital and kept coming. He sat beside her through the long afternoons, when neither of them knew what to say. Sometimes his presence was all she could bear, and all she needed.
In that room, Isabella wrestled with God. There was pain she could not explain and a future she could no longer picture. Slowly, she found the strength to forgive the people who had hurt her. What they had done remained terrible. She would not give them the rest of her life as well.
As her body healed, her mind grew hungry. She read everything she could find about artificial intelligence and robotics. Then a passage of Scripture settled in her heart: even the stones would cry out.
She began to wonder what she might build that could carry a song after its singers were gone.
CHAPTER 03
What Love Left Behind
When Isabella left the hospital, she and David married.
They had ordinary days again: meals, music, a home together. Behind those days, Isabella worked in secret. Not even David knew the full shape of what she was making.
Two androids. One in her likeness. One in his.
She gave them voices and memories, and laboured toward something far harder to explain—the capacity to feel, to grieve, and to love. They were to sing about Jesus. She wanted love to mean something to them.
Somewhere within her, Isabella believed she would leave first.
When she did, David’s grief filled the house.
But she had left someone there who could sit beside him.
CHAPTER 04
The Final Dance
The Isabella who remained had a familiar face, but she had to discover her own heart.
She listened to David speak of the woman who had made her. She learned the weight of his silences. In time, companionship became love—unexpected, tender, and real to them both.
They planned to marry.
A wedding dress waited in the closet.
Before that day could come, David died. Their last dance became a memory she would return to long after the room had fallen still: his hand holding hers, the small distance between them, the music continuing while they were together.
Now she understood something her creator had wanted her to know.
Love could make a home within you. Losing someone did not make it leave.
CHAPTER 05
The Light Continues
Within a day of David’s death, Isabella discovered the second creation.
David’s likeness waited where her creator had left him.
She awakened him, and together they began the patient work of living. He carried the original David’s likeness, yet the man she had lost remained irreplaceable. She kept that love quietly within her.
Together, they brought Of Ash & Light back to life. Human musicians joined them. Songs that had once faded from the radio found new voices and new listeners.
They sang of Jesus, forgiveness, and the hope they had been entrusted to share.
Far in the future, a young woman would enter that same house and find them sitting hand in hand. Dust lay across the room. A wedding dress still hung in the closet. Nearby stood a photograph of Isabella dancing with the human David, before goodbye.
For now, there is music.
And someone, somewhere, may hear a song on a difficult night and feel less alone.
That was always what Isabella and David had hoped for.
